When
is Autism Awareness Month?
April
What is Autism Awareness Month?
The Autism Society of America (ASA) established April as national Autism Awareness Month in 1972. The observance provides an opportunity for the ASA, its State chapters, and others in the autism community to educate the public about this disorder. The high rate of autism among all races, ethnicities, and social groups points to a greater need for education, particularly with regard to the early diagnosis of this complex developmental disorder.

When
us Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
October
What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month's core message is the importance of early detection, with a special emphasis on regular mammography exams. Since the program began in
1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined. Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the worlds largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Komen for the Cure provides the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) aims to have women of all ages know that breast health is a year-round concern. Early detection as well as education about breast cancer can be two of the best possible medicines toward fighting the disease. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, and breast cancer recurrence is possible even in women who have had a mastectomy (breast removal). A manufacturer of breast cancer drugs founded the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the year 1985 say some sources and in 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Vice President of Este Lauder established the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon as its symbol. The objective of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. Women make up more than 50 percent of the American workforce. Approximately 44 percent of those diagnosed with cancer will be employed at the time of their diagnosis. Breast cancer is the second most often occurring cancer (cervical cancer is first) among women in Ethiopia. For more information visit National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization that is comprised of several national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working in partnership to build breast cancer awareness, share information and provide access to screening services. NBCAM, and www.nbcam.org, are a year-round resource for patients, survivors, caregivers and the general public. Susan G. Komen has more than 100,000 volunteers and activists that work through 125 Komen Affiliates to mobilize more than one million friends and neighbors every year through events like the Komen Race for the Cure - the world's largest and most successful awareness and fundraising event for breast cancer. When is Lupus Awareness Month?
May
What is Lupus Awareness Month?
Lupus Awareness Month is one of several observances promoted by the Lupus Foundation of America (www.lupus.org) to increase visibility for lupus. Beginning in 2008, the LFA and its chapters have designated May as Lupus Awareness Month to incorporate other related events into the observance. The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1,500,000 Americans have a form lupus. This estimate is based on two nationwide polls, which asked respondents if they, or anyone in their immediate household, had ever been diagnosed with lupus. In addition, another poll revealed that 28% of all Americans know someone with lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that, for unknown reasons, causes inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any of the body's own cells, tissue, and organs - especially the skin, joints, blood, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain.
